After a gap of 12 years, the city will host an ATP Challenger tournament — a men’s $50,000 prize money event, to be held from October 19 to 25. The country’s top singles players, Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri, Ramkumar Ramanathan among others, are expected to be part of a field which is likely include a few top-100 players from 8-10 countries. The Karnataka State Lawn Association last conducted an event of this magnitude way back in 2003 when Gregory Carraz walked away with a grand double. The Frenchman won the singles crown beating Belgian Gilles Elseneer 6-4, 7-6 (4) and partnered countryman Rodolphe Cadart to clinch the doubles title. The ATP Challenger is a welcome addition to the busy calendar that the KSLTA have drawn up including the hosting of Davis Cup and ITF tournaments. The winner of the Challengers event will earn 80 points and the finalist will gain 48 points. The semifinalists, quarterfinalists and pre-quarterfinalists will garner 29, 15 and seven points respectively. Qualifiers stand to earn three bonus points.
